The Journey to Livvinwell By James Dyer
Author Interview
What was your childhood like?
It was good. To an outside observer, my family probably appeared poor. My two brothers, Les and Lane, my parents, and I lived in a modest two bedroom home. We took our baths in a big, metal washtub, our steak was spelled ‘bologna’, and most of our clothes were purchased used. However, we had a dog, a bicycle; and our neighbors were our friends. Because of these things, we were never poor.
Who are the people you most admire?
First comes Jesus. Then I would say my wife Abby, both of our daughters, Billy Graham, Jack Lalanne, and there are so many others, I can’t list them all. I admire my current and most recent pastors. I admire good speakers -- probably because I’m not one.
Where would you most like to live?
Besides Livvinwell, right here in my home town. That’s primarily because of all the good people here I’ve been privileged to meet. I consider many of them friends. I also serve over 650 families on my mail route each day and enjoy the work.
Why was this book written and what does it mean to you?
This book has become more than I ever imagined it would be. I view it as a little seed that grew to be a large and beneficial tree.
It all started in the year 2005. My mom was diagnosed with a really bad type of cancer. That was a sad time. I wanted very much to find a way to help her; to encourage her as she struggled with the disease. I started praying more.
In 2006, a story began to take shape in my thoughts. I knew the end before I knew the beginning, and I loved it. I began to carry pen and paper with me when I walked outdoors, turned on my radio, went to church, watched TV, etc. I listened carefully with the story’s ear. When worthy inspirations came, often at unexpected times and right out of nowhere, I wrote them down.
As the novel grew from seed to sapling, it was gradually becoming what I had prayed for and more. It was a fun and encouraging story from the start, but a new air of mystery and meaning was outpacing my expectations. It was becoming a book that readers might recommend to those they care about.
After more than 3 years of attention, research, and devotion, the little sapling has grown up. It has become a large and unique tree that offers great shade. I think my mom, who is now in Heaven, would be pleased.
I hope every reader enjoys it as much as I have. Even after writing it, I still cannot read it without feeling happier. For you see, Livvinwell is not your average town. And this is not your average story.
